Rode the lawnmower into a tree after a bad day of budgeting

Last Tuesday I sat down with our family budget and realized we were $400 over on groceries for the month. Both kids had birthdays coming up and I had no idea where that money was going to come from. I got so worked up about it that I mowed the lawn in a daze and ran straight into our maple tree. Thank goodness the mower just scraped the plastic, but it made me wonder, do any of you keep a separate buffer fund just for birthday gifts and celebrations?

Yeah @the_lisa might be onto something with those ceiling fan stories, but for real - we set aside $25 a paycheck into a "party fund" jar and it's saved us more times than I can count. Your mileage may vary, but that buffer has kept me away from the trees.
