Realized my oldest kid's school lunch costs more than a full meal kit delivery per serving

I was adding up what I spend on prepackaged snacks and drinks for their lunchbox each month and found out it's about $4.50 a day compared to $3.75 a serving for those meal kits, has anyone else tried swapping to packed leftovers instead?

$4.50 is cheap, meal kits take time and create more trash.

I spent like an hour last week opening five different plastic pouches just to make some sad little bowl of rice and beans. The cardboard box it came in was bigger than my microwave and went straight to recycling. Then I looked at my trash can and it was basically full of those little soy sauce packets and the frozen gel pack they threw in there. It felt like I paid extra to do the packaging company's job for them. And yeah, the meal itself was fine but nothing I couldn't have thrown together faster by just buying a can of beans and some rice. Totally with you on this one.
