Question about the 50/30/20 rule after 15 years of trying it

Tbh I stuck with the 50/30/20 split for almost a decade and it worked okay, but last year I realized the 'wants' category needed way more room when my kids hit middle school. Has anyone else tweaked the percentages to match their real life?

My buddy Mike tried the 50/30/20 thing for years. Then his daughter started competitive gymnastics at 11. Just the meet fees alone blew his "wants" budget out of the water. He ended up redrawing the whole thing to like 40/25/35 now. The fun stuff for the kid just costs way more than he planned for. He told me last week he's not even mad about it though.
