I just saw a shop in Phoenix using a new thermal paste that's a total mess
I stopped by a local repair shop in Phoenix last week to pick up a part, and I saw their techs using this new thermal paste that comes in a weird syringe. The stuff was everywhere. It was on the boards, on the heatsink fins, even on the edge of the CPU socket. I asked one guy about it, and he said, 'It's fine, it spreads out when you clamp it down.' But I've been doing this for ten years, and you can't just glob it on and hope for the best. The paste they were using was this thick gray goop, not like the normal stuff I use. It looked like it would cause hot spots for sure. Has anyone else run into this kind of sloppy paste job at other shops? What do you do when you see a tech cutting corners like that?

Three times I've had to clean that thick gray goop off a motherboard and it took like an hour with isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush each time... It seeps under the CPU and gets all in the socket pins if you're not careful.

Man, that's rough to see. A sloppy paste job can totally ruin a good CPU. I've had to clean up globs of that thick gray stuff before and it's a nightmare to get off the socket pins.
