I finally got around to testing a batch of old breakers from a 1980s panel swap
Used my new Greenlee tester on a Square D QO that looked fine, and it failed to trip within the proper time. It was just sitting in my garage for a backup. Learned that visual inspection isn't enough, even on stored parts. Anyone have a good method for checking old stock before you trust it?

That "visual inspection isn't enough" is a great reminder for how many things (not just tools) can degrade just sitting around.

Right, @mark731? Seen it with old gear. Looks fine until you put weight on it.

Ugh, PRECISELY. It's like that old climbing rope my neighbor kept in his garage for a decade. Looked totally fine from the outside, no fraying, no discoloration. Then he tried to use it to tie down a load on his truck and it just SNAPPED like a twig. Visual inspection is basically a lie we tell ourselves so we don't have to spend money or time. Fool me once, rubber that crumbles in your hand.
