Found a 1950s cookbook at a garage sale that listed lard as a key ingredient in EVERYTHING

I picked up this old spiral-bound cookbook from 1954 for 50 cents and was SHOCKED that every single recipe from cookies to gravy called for at least a half cup of lard, has anyone else run into old recipes that totally change how you see modern cooking?

Oh man, that's hilarious and terrifying at the same time! I found an old church cookbook from the 60s where every dessert started with "melt one stick of butter" and I thought that was wild. Your lard situation is next level though, like did people just carry around jars of the stuff everywhere? I guess when you're frying bacon for breakfast and using the grease for lunch cookies it makes sense in a gross way. Glad we evolved past that but I bet those recipes were probably delicious in a weird, heart-stopping kind of way.
