Ngl my NES power adapter almost started a fire last night

I was playing Super Mario Bros 3 in my basement in Chicago when I smelled burning plastic and saw the AC adapter smoking. Unplugged it quick and found the cord was cracked near the plug - anyone else check their old power bricks regularly?

Does anyone else keep finding dead bugs inside old electronics when you open them up to check?

Ants are the worst for this - I pulled an old VCR out of storage last year and found a whole colony had made a nest inside the power supply.
