Found a perfect working air purifier in a dumpster, had to pick between keeping it or selling it for $80 on FB Marketplace
Kept it and ran it for a week, but the filter was so clogged with dust that my apartment smelled like a campfire and I ended up spending $45 on a new filter, so really I should have just flipped it.

Man, that's a bummer. But you gotta ask yourself something real important here. Did you actually check the model number on that thing before you bought the replacement filter? Because a lot of those dumpster finds are old units that use filters nobody makes anymore. I'd be surprised if a shop even carried one for a random clearance model from five years ago. It sounds like you just grabbed a filter without looking up compatibility. And honestly, $45 for one filter is steep unless it's a HEPA grade. Did you price out the used unit on Marketplace versus the cost of a whole new filter? Sometimes the numbers just don't add up unless you were planning to keep it long term.

@wren806 makes a good point about checking the model number first. I remember reading somewhere that a lot of those older units use filters that are way more expensive or just straight up discontinued. Like my buddy found a Honeywell from 2018 in a skip and the filter cost him $60 because it was some special size nobody makes anymore. So yeah, you probably could've just flipped it for the $80 and saved yourself the hassle and the $45 filter cost.
