Unpopular opinion: vertical monitor setups are just for Instagram clout

I stopped by a coworking space in Austin last month and counted 8 out of 10 people with a vertical monitor that was clearly never used for real work. Every time I asked what they put on it, they said Slack or Spotify like that justifies losing horizontal space for actual spreadsheets or code. Why are we pretending a skinny strip of screen is a game changer when most of us just need two normal monitors side by side?

Honestly, I think you're being a bit harsh. A vertical monitor is actually pretty great for coding if you do full stack work - seeing your whole function at once beats scrolling forever. But yeah, 90% of people probably just use it for chat apps.

Ngl @troy_ross makes a good point about vertical monitors for full stack work. Staring at long CSS files or terminal logs feels way less annoying when you don't have to scroll constantly. Still cracks me up seeing people trying to watch YouTube videos on one though.
