A painter told me to stop sanding between coats

I was bitching about how long a job was taking at the supply house and this old painter said just skip the sanding on the second coat if you're using good mud. Tried it on a 12x12 bedroom last week and saved myself about an hour. Anyone else ever try skipping the sand between coats?

Man that old timer was right! I skipped sanding between coats on my last few drywall patches and it came out just as smooth with way less dust everywhere.

Three drywall patches I skipped sanding on last year all cracked within months.
