Talked to a retired cutterhead operator at the diner near the port
He told me he never once saw a full gearbox failure that didn't have a vibration spike show up in the logs at least two weeks prior. Said they'd just run it until it screamed, then swap the oil and keep going. That hit different because I've been ignoring those little spikes on our 12-inch dredge, chalking it up to normal sediment load. Now I'm pulling the last month of data. Anyone else actually act on those minor vibration warnings, or is it just background noise until something breaks?

That old operator's story is a good reminder. Those small spikes are the only warning you get before a major failure.

masondixon is right about those warnings. It reminds me of a guy who ignored a weird hum in his truck's rear end, which turned into a very expensive gear soup on the highway. Sometimes the quiet hints are the only ones you get.
