My old boss told me to ignore the suction gauge on the cutterhead dredge

He said, 'Just listen to the engine, you'll know if it's clogged.' I tried that last month on the Mobile River project and ended up with a full pump jam from a submerged log. The gauge was spiking for a full minute before the engine even groaned. Cost us half a day to clear it and check the wear rings. Anyone else had a boss give you advice that almost wrecked a pump?

Oh man, my buddy's foreman told him the same thing and they shredded an impeller!

Actually that foreman might have had a point. Sometimes you HAVE to push old gear past its limit to finish a job on time. A shredded impeller is just a cost of doing business if it means you don't miss a deadline. The real failure is being too careful and losing the contract.
