Just had a 3-inch suction line on my cutterhead dredge blow a gasket and flood the pump room near Lake Pontchartrain last Tuesday.

Honestly, it was a $15,000 lesson in checking those flange bolts for proper torque after every 250 hours, so has anyone else had a similar failure and what's your actual maintenance interval?

Checking flange bolts every 250 hours" is our rule too, no exceptions.

Funny how the strictest rules always form around the smallest, most boring parts. It's like we all know the big stuff gets our attention, so we make hard laws for the tiny things we'd otherwise forget. That 250 hour check probably started because someone skipped it once and everything went wrong. Now it's a religion. You see it everywhere, from changing furnace filters to backing up your computer. The little routines we hate doing are often the only thing holding the bigger system together.
