Appreciation post: My kid's sandbox mess showed me how to predict dredge clogs
I was cleaning up my kid's sandbox mess last weekend, and I couldn't help but notice how the wet sand piled up in weird ways. It dawned on me that silt does the exact same thing when we're working in shallow spots. So now, I pay more attention to the water flow near the dredge head, kind of like watching sand settle. Sure enough, last week I caught a clog building up before it became a real headache. Pretty wild that a toddler's playtime gave me a better trick than any training session. Guess you never know where you'll pick up a useful skill.

Honestly, the silt and sand comparison is smart, but tbh calling it the "exact same thing" is a bit off. Wet sand in a sandbox is mostly cohesion, like it sticks to itself. Silt in water is more about suspension and how fine particles behave in a flow. The watching-the-flow idea is still solid, though.

My uncle's farm had a creek that would flood with silt every spring. We'd watch how the water moved around the old fence posts to guess where it would settle. What did you see that helped you figure it out?

Wait, so what did the water look like right before the clog started? Like was it moving slower or changing direction?
