Visited a buddy's garage and saw he had zero ventilation for welding fumes
I stopped by my mate Dave's place last week to check out his new $500 welder setup, and he had all his windows shut with the door cracked an inch lol. He was burning through 6013 rods on some car panels and the air looked hazy blue in there after ten minutes. So who's right here, am I being paranoid about fume extraction or is he just tough enough to handle it?

Is it just me or does that whole "tough it out" attitude bleed into everything these days? I see it all the time at work too with guys refusing to wear ear protection around loud machinery, then they're surprised they can't hear their wives at dinner. It's like we turned a blind eye to the fact that breathing in metal dust and hot gas isn't the same as getting a little sun on your skin. A cracked door and a box fan would cost him like thirty bucks and an hour of his time, that's not exactly a luxury upgrade. I just don't get why we have to prove we're hard by ignoring the basic stuff our lungs need.

Ngl, honestly I think you're kind of overreacting here. Plenty of old school welders ran decades with just a cracked garage door and they're still breathing fine. Dave's probably fine with 6013 rods, those aren't the nastiest fumes anyway. I've seen guys weld in enclosed trailers with no fan at all and they just call it "character building." If he's not passing out or coughing up stuff by day three, he's probably got the right idea. Sometimes people overthink safety stuff and waste money on fancy ventilation systems they don't even need.
