Spent $150 on a 'precision' eraser shield and it just tore through my vellum like a cheese grater.
Has anyone found a brand that actually works without shredding the paper?

My 2 cents from years of drafting - the Staedtler Mars 550 is the only one that's ever worked for me on vellum without destroying it. I ruined three sheets with a steel Berol shield before I figured out the issue isn't the brand, it's the edge. Most shields have sharp factory edges that will catch and tear. Take a fine file or 600 grit sandpaper and gently round off the inside edge of your shield, then test on scrap. Makes a night and day difference. Also helps to tape the vellum down flat on both sides of where you're erasing so it doesn't lift up and get caught.

Ever try a light touch with a regular plastic shield instead? Hayes.tara is onto something with softer materials, but I've had good luck with Alvin's plastic shields if you barely skim the surface. That steel one you got sounds way too aggressive for vellum.
