Warning: don't ignore your car hitting 200,000 miles like I did

My engine light came on right after I passed 200k on the odometer last Tuesday during my commute and now I'm looking at a $1,200 repair bill for something I could've caught early - has anyone else had a milestone like that sneak up on them?

Yeah, "a little maintenance can save you from a huge headache" really hits home... I once blew a tire on a dirt road way out in the sticks because I kept putting off getting new ones. Ended up waiting four hours for a tow truck and missing a whole day of work over a fifty dollar swap.

Waited way too long to check my oil after I hit 190k and now I'm kicking myself. I mean, I always thought that stuff was just a suggestion, like recommended tire pressure or something. Then my buddy's car died on the highway at 210k and he had to pay double what I'm looking at now for a whole new engine. Actually changed my mind about skipping those routine checks. I started treating my odometer like a reminder to stay on top of fluids and belts after that. It's wild how a little maintenance can save you from a huge headache down the road.
