Spent forever trying to fix a squeaky floor in my kitchen
Thought it was a loose nail so I spent 3 hours pulling up carpet and pounding things back down. Turns out it was just the dollar store rubber mat underneath shifting, 10 seconds to slide it back and done.

...and @ward.piper you're not alone with that Q-tip thing, I've got a similar story that'll make you feel better. I spent a whole Saturday once ripping up half my kitchen floorboards because I thought the squeak was from a loose joist or something structural. Turned out to be a forgotten plastic bottle cap that had rolled under the cabinet years ago. Every time someone walked past it would press the cap against the subfloor just right and make this awful creak. Three hours of sweat and frustration over a piece of trash that took two seconds to toss. Makes me laugh now but man, at the time I wanted to flip the whole table over.

Oh man, I feel this one deep in my soul. The classic "spend 3 hours fixing a thing that was actually a 10 second fix" trap. I once took apart my entire bathroom sink drain because it was draining slow, only to find a single stray Q-tip stuck in the pipe, not even a real clog. So embarrassing (especially since my roommate was watching me the whole time).
