I finally get why people swear by those cheap glass cutting boards from Dollar Tree
Last week my daughter Sarah was visiting and she helped me meal prep for the week. She grabbed one of those thin glass cutting boards I bought for $1.25 and started chopping onions on it. I told her those things are junk and will dull her knives fast. She looked at me and said 'Mom, I'm not using it for cutting, I'm using it as a serving board for the cheese tray.' That hit me because I'd been so focused on what I thought they were for that I missed how versatile they could be. Now I use them under potted plants to catch water drips and as a heat shield on my counter for hot pans. Has anyone else found a weird alternate use for a dollar store item that made you feel silly for not thinking of it sooner?

Those things are junk" - yeah it's a cutting board not a cheese platter, who cares.

Friend of mine bought one of those cutting boards that's supposed to double as a cheese platter. The first time he used it for onions and garlic, the smell never came out. Tried scrubbing it, tried bleach, nothing worked. Now he just uses it as a pizza peel because it's basically ruined for anything else. So yeah @fisher.mason is right, those things are junk if you actually cook with them.

Does that thing get washed in a dishwasher? Because composite wood boards will crack and warp from the heat and steam. My buddy had one that looked like it was made of bamboo, and after a few washes the grain opened up like a sponge. He ended up tossing it because no amount of oiling could fix it. Lesson learned. Just use a good plastic board for garlic and onions, keep the wood one for bread or serving.
