Got told my dollar store knife was trash for carving pumpkins - do you upgrade or make it work?
My neighbor saw me using a $1.25 paring knife from Family Dollar on pumpkins last October and said I was ruining the blade for no reason. She insisted I buy a proper $8 carving kit from Target. Now I'm torn because the cheap knife actually cut fine for me, but she said I'd dull it faster. Has anyone else gotten similar feedback on cheap tools and actually switched, or did you push back?

Buy the $8 kit and don't look back. A dollar store blade is soft metal that'll chip and dull way faster than you think, especially if you're twisting or sawing through thick pumpkin rind. Your neighbor was actually saving you from a frustrating evening of fighting a bad edge.

My buddy Mike bought a cheap dollar store blade last Halloween and regretted it. He was carving with his kid and the blade chipped on the second pumpkin. Then it started bending when he tried to cut through the tough parts. He spent the rest of the night fighting with a dull edge while his kid lost interest. He finally borrowed my $8 kit and finished in ten minutes flat.
