My retractable leash broke at the worst possible moment last Tuesday
I was at Riverside Park and my dog spotted a squirrel, the handle just snapped right off in my hand. Had to chase her through three mud puddles before I caught her. Anyone else ditched the retractable leashes after a disaster like that?

Mine snapped at the dog park last month while my golden retriever was mid-sprint after a tennis ball. Had to tackle her near the fence and ended up face-first in a muddy puddle with the leash handle still clutched in my hand like a trophy for failure. Maybe not my finest moment, but at least the other dog owners got a good show out of it.

You're wrong about this one @davis.casey. A leash snapping isn't a failure, it's a manufacturing defect. That muddy puddle tackle was just you being a good owner who actually gives a damn. I've had the same thing happen with a cheap retractable leash that broke at the plastic clip. Now I only use nylon web leashes with metal hardware, never had one fail in ten years. The other owners probably clapped or laughed because they've been there too, not because they were judging you.
