Update: I finally painted my kitchen cabinets and the difference is crazy

They were this old, dark wood that made the whole room feel small. I spent a weekend sanding them down and used two coats of a bright white semi-gloss paint. After letting it cure for three days, I put on new brass handles. Now the kitchen looks twice as big and way more modern. Has anyone else tried painting cabinets and have tips for keeping the paint from chipping?

What kind of primer did you use before the paint? I've heard that's the real key for stopping chips, especially on that old, greasy wood. A good bonding primer made for cabinets seems to make a huge difference. Did you clean them with something like TSP first to get all the grime off?

Honestly, the whole primer and cure time talk is overblown. I just scuff sanded my old cabinets with a fine grit pad, wiped them down with a damp cloth, and used a good quality paint meant for trim and cabinets. No special primer. That was five years ago and they still look fine, no chips. People make this way too hard.

Honestly, my first try at this looked like a toddler did it, all drips and chips in a month. Susan_ward is totally right about the cleaning and primer. I had to strip it all and start over, using TSP and this crazy sticky bonding primer. Letting the paint cure fully before you even think about handles is the other big thing.
