Saw the weirdest kitchen backsplash at a friend's house in Portland

They used old vinyl records cut into tiles and grouted them right onto the wall. It looked cool from far away, but up close you could see the grooves and some labels were upside down. My friend said it took them a weekend and about 40 records from a thrift store. Has anyone else tried something this wild for a backsplash? I'm curious if it's even safe to clean.

Did they seal it with anything? I'd worry about grease and steam getting into those grooves (and the glue, honestly).

Actually, I've had a cutting board with that same kind of groove for years. The juice just runs into the channel and off the edge into my sink or a bowl. Grease from meat hasn't been a problem either, it doesn't really seep in. As for the glue, if it's a good wood glue, it's waterproof when it cures. Mine's held up fine through tons of washing.
