My neighbor swore by using toothpaste to fill nail holes in drywall and I tried it on a patch in my hallway

Nah, that's a total hack job waiting to happen. Toothpaste dries weird and shrinks, it'll look awful in a week. Just get a five dollar tub of spackle, it's made for the job and sands smooth. Your neighbor gave you bad advice, trust me.

Been there, tried that hack and it was a total mess. The toothpaste just cracks and turns yellow after a while. Spackle is the only way to go for real.

Yeah "cracks and turns yellow" is real... toothpaste has baking soda that reacts weird with latex paint.
