I thought painting over wallpaper was a terrible idea until my kitchen project

We have this old floral paper in our kitchen that's been there since the 90s, and I was sure paint would just peel off. I used a heavy-duty primer called Zinsser Gardz first, let it dry for a full day, and now the two coats of semi-gloss are holding up perfectly after six months. Has anyone else had a good result with a specific primer on tricky wallpaper?

Terrible idea" was my exact thought too! I'm still picturing someone's whole kitchen just shedding paint like a sunburned snake. Glad the Zinsser stuff worked, that's the real hero here.

A sunburned snake is such a weirdly perfect way to picture that mess.

That sunburned snake thing @tessacarter said is spot on. It reminds me of the old wallpaper in my grandma's bathroom, which bubbled up in these gross, peeling scales after a pipe burst. The whole room looked like it had a bad skin condition.
