I finally tried to install a motion sensor light in my garage

I was up on a ladder in my garage in Austin, trying to wire this thing myself. I thought I turned off the right breaker, but when I touched the wires, the whole garage door opener started beeping like a truck backing up. I just froze for a second, holding the wires. Ended up calling my brother-in-law who told me to check the separate outlet circuit. Anyone else have a smart home gadget fight back?

Garage door openers are almost always on their own dedicated circuit. I learned that the hard way too, trying to wire an outlet. You need to find the specific breaker for the opener itself, not just the general garage lights. A non-contact voltage tester is the only thing I trust before I put my hands on any wires now.

That non-contact voltage tester advice from @brooke484 saved my bacon last weekend.
