I finally got around to fixing the old screen door at my parents' place
While I was looking for the right spline size, my dad mentioned he used to just cut a new piece of screen with a pocket knife and hammer it in with a flathead screwdriver. No measuring, no special tools, just got it done. I had my digital calipers and a $30 spline roller kit. It got me thinking about how we make simple jobs feel complex now with all the gear. The door works fine, but I spent 45 minutes just prepping. Anyone else feel like older DIY methods were sometimes just more direct?

Man, I did the exact same thing last summer. Bought the whole kit, then just ended up using a butter knife and the old spline anyway. Worked perfectly.

Forget the idea that old methods were always better. Your dad's way works but often leaves a sloppy, wrinkled screen that fails faster. Having the right tool for the job usually means a cleaner result that lasts longer.

Feel this so hard. Watched my grandpa fix a window screen with just a butter knife and some swear words once. Now I'll watch three YouTube tutorials and buy a single-purpose tool before I even look at the thing. The job gets done either way, but one method definitely involves less time on Amazon.
