Update: That PVC plate tree I tried to build took 5 hours instead of 45 minutes

I figured building a plate tree from some PVC pipes and fittings would take me under an hour since the tutorial said it was 'easy' but after three trips to Home Depot because I kept buying the wrong diameter pipe it ended up taking me five hours. The issue was I didn't account for the wall thickness of the schedule 40 stuff versus the thinner pipe the video used so none of my collars fit right and I had to sand everything down. Anyone else run into weird measurement problems when trying to copy those cheap DIY gym builds from YouTube?

That specific wall thickness problem is brutal because the video people always use the thin stuff that's basically meant for pool toys, not structural stuff. Did you actually manage to sand down the schedule 40 enough to make the collars work, or did you just end up using a ton of PVC cement as filler? I ran into a similar issue with a plyo box build where the plan called for 3/4 inch plywood but you could tell their finished box was made from 5/8 inch and just looked totally different once mine was done. It's like these tutorials assume everyone has a secret stash of non-standard hardware store supplies.
