Refinished an old oak dresser with just sandpaper and danish oil
Took me about 8 hours over two weekends but the grain popped way nicer than any stain I've used before. Has anyone tried tung oil instead on a piece with a lot of scratches?

Did you sand down through all the scratches first or just oil over them?

Used to think you had to use poly or some thick finish to get a nice look. Tried danish oil on a beat up nightstand last year after reading about it online and I was dead wrong. The oil soaked into the old scratches and actually made them look like part of the wood's character instead of covering them up. Stripped the whole thing down with just 120 grit then 220 and it came out looking way better than my first few attempts with stain. Tung oil is supposed to be thicker so it might fill deeper gouges better but I'd test it on a hidden spot first.
