The $60 rope toy that lasted 3 minutes vs. the $5 one that went a month...
I dropped $60 on a heavy duty braided rope toy from a specialty shop, figured it'd survive my pit mix's chewing. He literally unraveled it in 3 minutes flat, rope threads all over my living room floor. Then my buddy handed me a $5 rope toy from the grocery store aisle, same dog same chewing style, and it lasted over a month. I'm starting to think price has nothing to do with durability in homemade toys... am I missing something, or have you guys seen this too?

I owned a pet store for 3 years and saw this pattern all day. The $60 ropes are usually made with tighter braids and thicker fibers, but that actually makes them stiffer and easier for a dog to get a good grip on to unravel. The cheap ones are looser and softer, so the fibers slide against each other more and absorb the stress instead of snapping. I'm pretty sure the manufacturing process matters more than the price tag, specifically how the strands are twisted together and if they're heat sealed at the ends to prevent fraying. You probably got unlucky with a rope that looked heavy duty but was actually designed badly for your dog's specific bite width and jaw strength.
