Figured out I was tying my braided rope toys all wrong after 2 years

I always just did a simple overhand knot on the ends of my braided fleece toys. They'd last maybe a week before my lab would pull them apart. Last month my buddy Tom watched me make one and said 'dude, you gotta do a double fisherman's knot, not a single.' He showed me and now the toy I made 3 weeks ago is still in one piece. Anyone else find out they were doing some basic step completely backwards this whole time?

Same thing happened to me with cast iron pans haha. Cooked on them for years with soap and scrubbing like a madman until someone told me to just scrape and oil them. It's wild how many little things we just assume we're doing right because nobody ever stops to show us the real trick. Makes you wonder what other stuff in life we've got backwards without even knowing it.

That line about "makes you wonder what other stuff in life we've got backwards" really hit me. It's so true, and it applies to way more than just kitchen gear. I think about how we're all taught to push through and never ask for help, when really asking for help is the smartest thing you can do. Or how we're told to save money for a rainy day but nobody explains that building skills is a better investment than just hoarding cash. We just blindly follow these scripts without ever questioning them, you know? It's a weird feeling once you start noticing all the backwards advice we've been fed.
