Why does everyone still use those thin particle board monitor stands

I see so many build pictures with wobbly monitor stands from cheap desk kits. I built my own from a 2x6 oak board and some pipe fittings 8 years ago, still rock solid. Are you guys just planning to replace those particle boards every year or what?

My neighbor bought one of those cheap L-shaped desks from a big box store last month and the monitor stand leg already snapped off. It's like people just accept that furniture is disposable now. I noticed the same thing happens with bookshelves and nightstands, people buy the cheapest option and then act surprised when it falls apart. We've gotten so used to replacing things every couple years that we forgot what real furniture feels like. A solid wood board and some simple legs will outlast three of those particle board setups. Why spend money over and over when you could just build it right once.

Not gonna lie, I've had a cheap particle board monitor stand from some no-name desk for like 6 years now and it's fine. Maybe I got lucky or maybe people are putting way too much weight on these things like centerfolding a 40 inch ultrawide? Not everything needs to be a heirloom piece of furniture. Sometimes you just want something that works for a few years and then you upgrade your whole setup anyway. Building stuff is cool but acting like everyone who buys a $30 stand is throwing money away feels a little over the top.
