PSA: Those cheap foam cable sleeves actually collect dust like crazy

I put one of those split loom sleeves on my monitor cable about 8 months ago to clean up the back of my desk. Looked great for a few weeks. Then I moved my desk to vacuum last weekend and pulled it off. The entire sleeve was packed with gray dust and little bits of cat hair. It was basically a dust filter on a cable. Has anyone else had this problem or is it just my dusty basement setup?

My brother put one of those on his guitar amp cable and after a year it was so full of dust it actually started smelling weird when the amp got warm. We had to cut it off with scissors because the zipper completely seized up from all the gunk. Now I just use velcro straps on my cables and shake them out every few months.
