PSA: My dad's comment about my monitor arm made me rethink how I build now

I was showing my dad my new monitor arm setup and he goes "you know, we used to just stack phone books under our CRTs." It got me thinking about how fast everything has changed... like I spent 8 hours measuring and drilling for cable grommets when ten years ago people were just happy to have a flat screen. Made me appreciate how good we have it with all these adjustable mounts and clips. Has anyone else's parents made a comment that made you stop and think about how much desk setups have evolved?

That line about "just happy to have a flat screen" really hit me. I spent two hours last weekend trying to hide one cable behind my desk and now I feel silly complaining about it. The biggest thing I learned the hard way is to measure your desk thickness before buying any clamp on arms. My first arm wouldn't fit because my desk was too thick and I had to return it. Also don't overthink cable management, just get some velcro straps and bundle them behind the desk where you can't see them. The adjustable mounts are amazing but you don't need to spend a fortune on fancy clips and grommets. Keep it simple and your setup will work just fine.
