Always thought cable trays were overkill until I built a standing desk

I used to just zip-tie everything underneath and call it done. After switching to electric standing legs, those zip ties snapped every time I raised the desk. Now I see why people spend $40 on a wire basket, but is hiding cables really that important if nobody sees under your desk anyway?

And yeah I went through that same phase where I thought it was dumb to spend money on something hidden. But what finally got me was when I tried to add a USB hub and the whole nest of cables just came crashing down mid-reach. Now I use those adhesive cable clips that stick to the bottom of the desk itself, not the legs. They cost like $8 for a pack of twenty and keep everything tight against the wood so it can't snag when the desk moves up or down. Not as tidy as a tray but way better than the zip tie disaster I had before.
