I finally tried making a desk out of an old wooden crate

Saw a guy at the hardware store last Saturday grab a cheap shipping crate from the back and say he turned it into a standing desk shelf. Went home and tried it myself with a $8 crate I found at a salvage yard, sanded it down and added some legs. Has anyone else repurposed weird stuff like crates or pallets for desk decor?

Eight bucks for a crate that didn't fall apart? That's unbelievable.

The real question is whether that eight dollar crate is going to rot away in a few months from all the moisture in the air. @the_jason probably found a decent batch, but I've seen enough cheap crates turn into splinters after one rainy season to know it's a gamble. A solid wood box can last years if you keep it off the ground and out of direct dirt contact. People focus on the price tag but forget about the environment it's sitting in most of the time.
