The $3 mortar and pestle that broke my instant coffee habit

I grabbed a tiny granite mortar and pestle at a garage sale in Tucson for 3 bucks, mostly as a joke. Turns out grinding a pinch of cinnamon and brown sugar into my cheap Folgers before brewing makes it taste like a $6 latte from the shop down the block. Anyone else tried grinding spices straight into the grounds, or am I late to this weird little party?

Ha! That’s brilliant, but try grinding a little black pepper in there too. It gives the coffee this warm, spicy kick that makes it taste like something from a fancy brunch place.
