My cheap coffee hack from a diner in rural Kansas
Stopped at a diner outside Wichita last week and watched the cook dump a pinch of salt into the coffee pot before brewing. I asked why and he said it cuts the bitter taste from cheap beans. Tried it at home with my $8 bag of store brand coffee and honestly it works. A tiny pinch per 12 cup pot is all you need. Anyone else run into weird diner coffee tricks that actually help?

Salt trick is legit, old school trick I picked up from a roadside place in Nebraska too. A little goes a long way to smooth out the harshness.

Man, I feel you on that @victorcoleman. I was skeptical at first when someone told me about the salt trick a few years back, but tried it on a batch that came out way too sharp and it mellowed it right out. It's wild how something that simple can make such a difference. I've had friends screw up their coffee with it though, so you really gotta be careful not to overdo it. A tiny pinch is all it takes, hit that sweet spot just right and it's like magic.
