Learned a hard lesson about salt grinders last week

I bought a cheap salt grinder from a dollar store 3 years ago and it worked fine until last week. Ground some coarse sea salt into my morning coffee thinking it was black pepper. One sip and I nearly spit it out across my kitchen counter in Nashville. Has anyone else mixed up seasonings accidentally with similar gear?

... actually, most of those cheap grinders use a ceramic burr that's really only meant for fine grinding. If you were using coarse sea salt, it probably wasn't getting crushed properly and just fell through whole. I had the same thing happen with a plastic grinder from a grocery store, it would just spit out big chunks of salt no matter how I adjusted it. You might want to check if your grinder has a little screw or dial on the bottom that lets you change the grind size.

And you know what, that whole thing about the ceramic burr reminds me of a time I tried to grind black pepper in a salt grinder I had. Forgot it was for salt only, of course. The pepper just shot out the sides like it was trying to escape. Had peppercorns rolling all over the counter. My cat thought it was a game and started chasing them around. Took me ten minutes to sweep everything back into the jar.
