Warning: I flooded my garden path by using wrong gravel size

I spent a whole Saturday laying down what I thought was perfect pea gravel for my 30-foot pathway. Then a neighbor walked by and pointed out it was too fine, now every light rain turns it into a muddy mess. Anyone else make this mistake with base layers?

I actually watched a landscaping video last week that said the same thing, how fine gravel acts like concrete when it gets wet and just locks everything up tight. They recommended going with crushed stone or a 3/4 inch base layer underneath the pretty stuff to let water drain through. Sorry you had to learn that the hard way, at least it's fixable with a little extra work.

Ugh, been there done that with my first path... I ended up having to shovel out all the fine gravel and it was a nightmare. What worked for me was putting down a layer of crushed stone about 4 inches deep first, then compacting it with a hand tamper before adding the top layer. Also made sure to slope the path just a tiny bit away from the house so water runs off instead of pooling. The crushed stone lets everything drain through so you don't get that muddy concrete effect.
