My mother in law told me to put cups on the bottom rack and now I have a pile of plastic shards

Last Thanksgiving my mother in law insisted her way of loading the dishwasher was better. She said putting all the cups on the bottom rack saves space and the top rack is basically useless. I let her load it up while I made mashed potatoes. When I opened it after the cycle, two of my good plastic cups had melted and warped into the heating element. The smell was like a burning car interior. She still claims I must have run it on the wrong setting. Has anyone else had a well meaning relative destroy their dishes with bad loading advice?

Well that's on you for using plastic cups in a dishwasher in the first place. If you're going to use them, stick them on the top rack and keep them far from the heating element.
