Stopped pre-rinsing my plates after a repair guy chewed me out

I always rinsed every plate until the water ran clear before loading the dishwasher. Thought I was helping. Then a repair guy came to fix a drainage issue and said the detergent needs food particles to work properly, and that rinsing actually wastes water and makes the machine less effective. He pointed at the manual I never read and showed me where it says to scrape, not rinse. Has anyone else dealt with a dishwasher that actually cleans worse when you pre-rinse?

Pre-rinsing never hurt my dishes and I'm keeping on doing it.

Wait, is pre-rinsing like a crime now or something? Because I have definitely been doing it my whole life and my dishes aren't mad about it. I mean, sure, sometimes I stand there scrubbing a plate for like five minutes before it even touches the dishwasher, which probably makes me look like a crazy person. But honestly, I'd rather be safe than sorry, you know? My dishwasher has never complained, and I'm not about to start a whole new routine just because some manual says not to.
