Heard my neighbor bragging about presoaking every dish in bleach before the dishwasher

I was out back grilling and the guy next door yelled over that he soaks his plates in bleach water for 10 minutes before loading because he read it kills all germs. Pretty sure he's ruining his dishes and maybe the machine too. Has anyone else run into someone with a weird prerinse method like that?

My buddy tried this for like two weeks with his Corelle plates and nothing happened except his dishwasher started leaving a weird film on everything. He also went through three bottles of bleach in a month which is just dumb expensive. I mean unless he's eating off the floor or something, regular dishwasher detergent plus the hot dry cycle already kills basically everything. Seems like overkill for some everyday germs.

Yeah "dumb expensive" nails it. Three bottles of bleach a month just so your plates are slightly more sterile than normal? That's nuts.
