Warning: My local butcher in Springfield had a crazy deal on pork shoulder today
I went in for some ground beef and saw they had whole shoulders marked down to $1.99 a pound, so I grabbed one on a whim. Now I'm trying to figure out a simple rub and slow cook method for tonight, maybe just salt, pepper, and garlic powder. What's your go-to easy recipe when you get a surprise cut of meat like this?

Actually that's the worst way to handle a good cut like that. Just salt and pepper is a total waste when you have a whole shoulder to work with. @simonl86 has it wrong, a few hours in the oven won't get you the right texture at all. You need a real rub with brown sugar and chili powder, and it needs to cook way longer, like all day. Otherwise you end up with tough meat instead of something that pulls apart easy.

That's a great price, I always grab those deals too. Honestly I just use salt, pepper, and a little smoked paprika if I have it, then cook it low in the oven. The last one I did fell apart after a few hours.

Bro "worst way" lol. Lilychen acting like we're all competing for a Michelin star over here with a pork shoulder. Salt, pepper, and smoked paprika is classic and has never let me down. Not everything needs a whole science project with brown sugar and a 24 hour cook time. Sometimes simple is better and you can still get it to fall apart if you just set it and forget it long enough.
