My neighbor swore his 10 minute chili was foolproof

He said just dump canned beans, tomato sauce, and a ton of chili powder into a pot and heat it up. I tried it last Tuesday and it tasted like spicy ketchup soup, not chili. Anyone else get burned by a simple recipe that was way too simple?

Honestly, did he even brown any meat or onions first or was it literally just dumping cans into a pot? Like, that's not even a baseline chili, that's just canned soup with extra steps. I'm trying to figure out if the recipe is truly that bad or if he just skipped the entire foundation of building flavor.

Paige, you're right on the money about the missing browning, but I think everyone's missing a bigger clue. Look at the consistency in the video. No way that's just canned tomatoes and beans. My guess is he added a can of condensed tomato soup as the base, maybe even cream of mushroom. That would explain that weird glossy, almost gravy-like look. A real chili breaks down over time, that stuff looked like it came out of a can and stayed that way. So the question isn't just about the meat, it's about whether he used a soup can as his entire liquid foundation.

@paige_martin you nailed it. That's not chili, that's a crime against beans.
