My boyfriend keeps salting pasta water like it's the ocean itself

I watched him dump in almost a quarter cup of salt for one box of spaghetti, and the noodles came out tasting like a salt lick. Who taught people this, or did we all just see one chef do it on TV and run with it?

Honestly, "salt it like the ocean" is just an excuse to use half the container on one pot of noodles. I’m convinced the only people who actually follow that rule are trying to recreate the Dead Sea in their kitchen. At that point you might as well just eat a handful of pretzels and call it pasta.

Jake, how much salt are you actually using when you follow that rule? A teaspoon of salt per quart of water is standard for pasta water and it makes a real difference in how the noodles taste. Are you dumping in half a cup without measuring or is your ocean just extra salty?
