That time I used a dark blue background instead of black for my character art
I was working on a digital portrait in Procreate last Tuesday and decided to swap the usual black canvas for a deep navy (#0a1128 or something close). The highlights on the armor popped way more than I expected, like the contrast felt softer but still dramatic. Turns out pure black can kill the depth in your shadows, you know? Has anyone else tried a colored base layer and gotten weirdly good results?

Done that with a deep maroon for a fantasy scene once... gave the whole thing this weird warmth that black never could. Made me wonder if pure black is just a crutch we all need to drop.

Whoa, wait, dark blue? That's crazy, I never would have thought of that. I've always just grabbed black without a second thought. It's wild that something so simple could change the highlights that much. I gotta try this with a deep dark green for my next character bust, see if it warms up the skin tones.
