That one comment about my brush strokes still bugs me

I was at a digital art meetup in Austin last spring and this older guy looked at my piece and said my brush strokes were too 'smooth' like I used a filter. He said real artists leave texture, but I spent 2 hours blending that sky on purpose. Has anyone else had someone critique a style choice you made on purpose?

Wait, a grown man actually told you that you worked too hard on purpose? That's like yelling at a chef for seasoning the steak too evenly. Seriously, the whole point of digital art is having control over your blending, and calling smoothness a "filter" is just old gatekeeping nonsense. Keep those baby-soft skies and let the gatekeepers clutch their pixelated pearls.

Pixelated pearls" is the ironic thing, since real gatekeepers used to scream that digital art wasn't real art at all.
