Back in 2019 a veteran concept artist told me to stop blending so much

Back in 2019 a veteran concept artist told me to stop blending so much during a workshop in Seattle. He said I was overworking the soft brushes and making everything muddy, so he made me block in hard shapes with a square brush for 2 weeks straight. Has anyone else had an old school tip that completely changed how you approach digital painting?

Huh, I used to think blending was the whole point, but that actually makes a ton of sense.
