Why our new pre-shift huddle is the best thing we've done all year

I've been a diesel mechanic for over a decade, and the biggest hurdle was always coordination between bays. Last month, I pitched the idea of a five-minute huddle each morning to discuss incoming jobs and tool availability. We started it, and immediately, the confusion over who was doing what vanished. For example, when two trucks came in with similar transmission issues, we assigned them to different specialists right away, saving hours. It's a small ritual, but it's fostered a sense of teamwork I hadn't seen before. I'm just thrilled that something so simple has made our days so much smoother and more productive.

Was it challenging to implement the huddle at first? I run a warehouse, and we tried something similar with our shift turnovers. Just a quick five-minute chat about incoming orders and equipment status reduced so many errors. It's fantastic that you've found a rhythm that works for your team.

Oh, it was quite a challenge initially. We had pushback from team members who saw daily meetings as redundant. What worked was framing each huddle around two non-negotiable topics, like safety incidents and backlog priorities, which made the purpose clear. For instance, when we consistently reviewed forklift checklists together, maintenance issues got reported faster. That concrete result helped everyone see the value, and the habit stuck.

Wish our office huddles felt that useful. Usually we just rehash pointless corporate stuff instead of things that actually fix problems.
